The 10th Anniversary Edition of the Elm Grove News-Independent (September 2020) contains an article on Elmbrook Rotary's "Business Person of the Year" award.

The award recipient was announced (via Zoom) on Friday, August 14, 2020.  The 2020 awardee was William ("Bill") Selzer, retired Fire Chief of the Village of Elm Grove Fire Department. Award committee chair (and ERC member) Ralph Gould announced the awardee and later presented him with the applicable plaque.

The story appears on p. 6 of this anniversary edition. Printed copies are available at many locations, including the Elm Grove Public Library, Sendik's, and Ace Hardware. The file can also be viewed online (click on ARCHIVE).

Congratulations again to Chief Selzer!

Basic Education and Literacy Month

September is "Basic Education and Literacy" month in Rotary. Basic education and literacy is one of The Rotary Foundation’s six Areas of Focus. We know that basic education and literacy are essential for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace. Read more to understand the challenges.

Consider these facts:

  • If all women completed primary education, there would be 66% fewer maternal deaths.

  • A child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past the age of five.

  • If all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty, which would be equivalent to a 12% cut in world poverty.

The world is making good progress in this area. According to a 2014 United Nations Millennium Development Goals progress report, literacy rates among adults and youths are on the rise and the gender gap in literacy is narrowing. But pressing global needs remain:

  • 58 million children worldwide are out of school.

  • Even after four years of primary schooling, as many as 250 million children cannot read and write.

  • 781 million adults are illiterate.

Rotary supports activities and training to improve education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

TRF Area of Focus Statement of Purpose and Goals:

TTRF enables Rotarians to ensure that all people have sustainable access to basic education and literacy by:

  • Supporting programs that strengthen a community’s ability to provide basic education and literacy to all
  • Increasing adult literacy
  • Working to reduce gender disparity in education
  • Funding graduate scholarships for career-minded professionals related to basic education and literacy
Parameters for Eligibility:

The Rotary Foundation considers activities targeting the following to be within the scope of the basic education and literacy area of focus:

  • Improving academic outcomes at the early childhood, primary, and secondary levels, in collaboration with local school officials
  • Educating adults in reading, writing, and numeracy skills
  • Providing professional development opportunities for teachers with a qualified trainer in curriculum implementation, effective instructional methods, or student assessments
  • Strengthening basic educational outcomes by providing improved learning materials and facilities supported by enhanced curricula and new professional development for teachers
  • Improving academic support for before- and after-school programs by training tutors and teachers, conducting student assessments, and providing equipment if needed
  • Supporting educators’ ability to help students with physical or developmental disabilities achieve greater academic outcomes by providing professional development opportunities for teachers and staff, as well as basic educational materials and enhanced facilities if needed

The Rotary Foundation considers activities targeting the following to be outside the scope of the basic education and literacy area of focus and as such are not eligible for global grant funding:

  • Projects that consist exclusively of infrastructure, vehicles, or equipment purchases, and training on their use
  • Projects that provide salaries, tuition, or school supplies without the means for the community or non-Rotary entity to maintain these in the future
  • Projects that purchase only extracurricular or play materials or playgrounds

"Million Dollar Journey" Update & Continuation

Rotary Million Dollar Journey Reaches its Goal… and Continues

After reaching a $1,000,000 fundraising goal early, Rotary International Districts 6220 & 6270 extend the goal deadline and dollar amount to support the Rotary Foundation during trying times.

A joint effort between the Wisconsin & Michigan Rotarians of districts 6220 and 6270 to raise $1,000,000 for the Rotary Foundation by October, 2020, reached its goal four months early. With that success, and with even greater need, the districts will continue the journey by raising more funds, and a new conclusion in April, 2021.

A bit over one year ago, on the recommendation of Rotary International District Governors Steve Handrick and Steen Sanderhoff, their respective districts embarked on a path to collectively raise one million dollars of new gifts to the Rotary Foundation; a Million Dollar Journey. With many generous gifts – each in excess of $10,000 – from both districts, the goal was reached early, in July of 2020.

When the Journey launched, the districts planned a celebratory dinner for all of the contributors along the fundraising pathway, to have taken place in November 2020. The presence of the COVID-19 pandemic will make that celebration impossible at that time, and the districts agreed that it should be postponed until April 29, 2021.

Seeing the postponement as an opportunity, now past-governors Handrick & Sanderhoff and current district governors Scott Knaffla and Craig Burnett agreed that the districts should continue the Journey’s effort, and have set a new goal of $2,000,000 to be reached by April 1, 2021.

As with the first part of the Journey, the minimum amount of gifts within the journey is $10,000 to qualify for attendance at the celebratory dinner. Gifts may be made in a number of ways:

  1. Outright gifts of cash or appreciated securities
  2. A three-year pledge of cash or appreciated securities
  3. A Life income agreement funded with cash, appreciated securities or real estate, including charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, or pooled income funds.
  4. A bequest commitment via a will, life insurance policy, revocable trust, or a retirement plan
Each district has a team of Rotarians who stand ready to discuss the continuing campaign, give a presentation about the journey, or to interact directly with a potential donor. Donors or clubs are encouraged to contact PDG and Endowment/Major Gifts Advisor Nancy Rhodes to discuss the opportunity to add needed funds to the Rotary International Foundation during this time of pandemic and worldwide economic challenge.

Rotarians and others are encouraged to join in this important Journey at a time when it is truly needed.

African Region Polio Free
The World Health Organization (WHO) on August 25. 2020, announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region. This is an historic and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary’s top priority.

[Click on the photo above to read the full story.]

Now that the African region is free of wild poliovirus, five of WHO’s six regions, representing more than 90 percent of the world’s population, are free of the disease. Polio caused by the wild virus is still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan (the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean region).
Common Hope Update
Avi Mylrea joined the ERC Zoom virtual meeting from Minnesota on Friday, August 28, and provided an update on how Common Hope in Guatemala is coping with COVID-19 and adapting to it. She shared a number of most exciting and creative ways in which Common Hope continues to care for the community in Guatemala. The Zoom session was recorded; therefore, simply click here or on the photo below to view the briefing.

Avi also reported on the following ways in which those interested can provide support to the Common Hope efforts in Guatemala:
  1. Click here to sponsor a student! – By the way,  WE HAVE A MATCH! The first month of every new sponsorship in September will be matched by a generous anonymous donor!
  2. Click here to learn more and donate to Covid-19 Response efforts – Together, we can provide hope in the face of uncertainty.  Join us in the fight to navigate forward with creativity and innovation.
  3. Walk For Hope and let’s show the world that HOPE matters and Elmbrook Rotary is making that hope real for kiddos in Guatemala.
  4. Celebrate Sponsorpalooza this September! Let’s celebrate the POWER of HOPE and the 5th year of Sponsorpalooza!
ERC School Supplies Drive
Elmbrook Rotary Club just concluded another successful drive for school supplies. Divided between the 95th Street School (K - 5th Grade; a SaintA school) and Cathy's Closet, the amount of items collected was phenomenal! Following is an inclusive, but not exhaustive, list:  20 backpacks, 431 markers of various kinds, more than 1,000 pencils, 50 packs of crayons, 115 pocket folders, 104 blue sticks, 480 legal pad sheets, tissues and hand sanitizers, 50 medical masks, 60 tooth brushes, 72 tubes of tooth paste, & 12 soccer balls.

Way to go, ERC! Specials thanks go out to Greg Bonk, Jan Constable, and Jack Nelson for spearheading the drive, collecting the items, and delivering to both organizations.
RI Virtual Convention Sessions Available

The recordings for each breakout session of the recently completed RI Virtual Convention can be accessed by clicking here or clicking on the image below.

Click the title of each breakout and you should be taken to the recording. If you are prompted to ‘sign up’ for the convention again, there should be a selection to check indicating that you have already signed up. In view of the current ERC survey concerning the format of our future meetings, especially recommended for viewing is "Using Virtual Tools To Engage Members" originally live streamed on Monday, June 22, at 08:00 a.m.

The RI Convention team is also in the process of transitioning the recordings to a digital asset management portal. The recordings will be accessible in that location after the end of July. Do take advantage of these resources.

Rotary Opens Opportunities
Holger Knaack, member of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum-Lauenburg-Möln, Germany, is Rotary International President for 2020-2021.

A Rotary member since 1992, Knaack has served Rotary as treasurer, director, moderator, member and chair of several committees, representative for the Council on Legislation, zone coordinator, training leader, and district governor. He is an endowment/major gifts adviser and was co-chair of the Host Organization Committee for the 2019 Rotary International Convention in Hamburg. Knaack and his wife, Susanne, are Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation and members of the Bequest Society.

Rotary Opens Opportunities is the theme chosen by President Knaack for 2020-2021. At the International Assembly in San Diego in January 2020, he had the following to say about his theme: "So as you can see, Rotary is not just a club that you join. It is an invitation to endless opportunities. It opens opportunities to serve in a project as big and historic as End Polio Now and also in a small community project, where you just plant a tree. And it opens opportunities for you to live a richer, more meaningful life, with friends around the world, based on our core valuesAs Rotarians, we are very blessed to take on leadership roles at this wonderful moment for our organization. Everything we do opens another opportunity for someone, somewhere. Therefore, the theme for our year is: Rotary Opens Opportunities."
Online ERC & ERF Payments/Donations
It is now possible for members of Elmbrook Rotary Club (ERC) to make online payments and donations both to ERC and to the Elmbrook Rotary Foundation (ERF).

Two separate commercial merchant accounts have been activated which intend to keep transactions separated between ERC and ERF.

To make payments to ERC, simply follow the link provided in one's individual club account (and quarterly statements). A surcharge of 5% is billed to one's club account when utilizing a credit card or debit card.

To make donations or payments to ERF, simply click the "Donate" or "Donate Now" button that can be found on multiple pages on the ERC web site. Or, one can click the URL link that will be provided in ERF invoices to club members. Please ensure that donations or payments intended for the ERF account are not made to the ERC account. The opposite is also true. And, please remember that not all payments to the Foundation [a 501(c)(3) entity] are tax-deductible. IRS rules and policies must be followed.

Finally, one can always use the old-fashioned (and least expensive) way of payment/donation with an individual check or bank check via "Bill Pay" at one's bank.

At ELMBROOK ROTARY - We Rise & Shine!

When we say "WE RISE & SHINE” to others, it means:
  • WE RISE to meet early every Friday.
  • WE RISE to the occasion by helping those in need.
  • WE RISE to make a difference in our community and the world.

  • WE SHINE by living the Rotary 4-way Test.
  • WE SHINE by staying positive and encouraging others.
  • WE SHINE by lighting the way for service above self in Brookfield, Elm Grove, and beyond.
The tagline appears on our Coffee Mugs, on our Web site, on club emails, and on other communications going out. Try using the tagline the next time you’re talking to someone about Elmbrook Rotary or Rotary in general. In fact, consider purchasing an Elmbrook Rotary Coffee Mug for $7.
