Business Person of the Year 2019
Year 3 of Elmbrook Rotary Club's "Business Person of the Year" award was launched on August 5 with press releases to a number of local print and digital media as well as an "e-blast" to hundreds of Brookfield and Elm Grove businesses.

This award is a way for ERC to recognize individuals in our community who are service-minded and doing outstanding work.  Additionally, this award is a means of making the public aware of ERC and its contributions to the local, regional, national, and international communities.

Elmbrook Rotary Club is a group of professionals and community leaders (movers & shakers) who are in an ideal position to sponsor/lead this event.  ERC members are not eligible for this award; however, anyone is encouraged to nominate a candidate who you personally know would be "worthy" of this award.  Last year's winner, Mark Mirsberger, CEO of Dana Investment Advisors, was nominated by Noaman Sharief.

The deadline for receipt of nominations is October 5, and the winner will be honored at the ERC meeting on Friday, October 25.  For more program information and details on making a nomination, please visit:

October is Economic and Community Development Month
This month also includes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on the 17th and World Polio Day on the 24th of October.

Rotary supports investments in people to create measurable and enduring economic improvement in their lives and communities.

The Rotary Foundation enables Rotarians to invest in people by creating sustainable, measurable, and long term economic improvements in their communities and livelihoods by:
  • Building the capacity of entrepreneurs, community leaders, local organizations, and community networks to support economic development in impoverished communities;
  • Developing opportunities for productive work;
  • Reducing poverty in under-served areas; and
  • Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to economic and community development.
World Polio Day
World Polio Day is celebrated on October 24. World Polio Day was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus vaccine, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Polio is a disease caused by a virus that affects the nervous system and is mainly spread by person-to-person contact. Polio can also be spread by drinking water or other drinks or eating raw or undercooked food that are contaminated with the feces of an infected person.

In 1988, the Forty-first World Health Assembly adopted a resolution for the worldwide eradication of polio. It marked the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), spearheaded by national governments, WHO, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), UNICEF, and later joined by additional key partners including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. This followed the certification of the eradication of smallpox in 1980, progress during the 1980s towards elimination of the poliovirus in the Americas, and Rotary International’s commitment to raise funds to protect all children from the disease.

Overall, since the GPEI was launched, the number of cases has fallen by over 99%. More than 18 million people are able to walk today, who would otherwise have been paralyzed. An estimated 1.5 million childhood deaths have been prevented through the systematic administration of vitamin A during polio immunization activities.

Currently there remain only two countries with endemic polio, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Elmbrook Rotarians Travel to Guatemala in November
Mark and Evonne Zalewski, together with Larry Winkelhake and his wife Jean Guzetta, will represent Elmbrook Rotary Club in Antigua, Guatemala, at the high school graduation of their sponsored students (Monica Rivera & Carlos de Leon, respectively). They will also visit our own club student (Sergio Cuc), who is finishing 11th grade.

This graduation trip encompasses five days of learning about Common Hope’s programs, diving deeper into Guatemalan culture, and of course attending the graduation ceremony to see their sponsored students receive their diplomas.

Mark and Evonne began sponsoring Monica Esquivel Rivera six plus years ago as an outgrowth of their first Vision Team experience in 2013. Having visited her several times, they have steadily tracked her progress and are very proud of her. She will graduate into the field of teaching and hopes to be a doctor someday.

Larry and Jean attended the graduation of our club student, Juan Pablo Martinez Ramirez, in 2018. During that week met Carlos de Leon, who is majoring in Accountancy and IT.  They became his sponsor and will see him graduate, as well as spend time with his family, during the visit.

ERC’s club student this year, Sergio Cuc, is finishing 11th grade and will graduate in November 2020 in the field of automobile mechanics.

Anyone interested in representing Elmbrook Rotarians at that event should contact Erik Moeser. We have had representation from the club every year since 2014. It is a display of amazing volunteerism in action and is so very meaningful to the graduates as they begin an adult life that is quite different from those who do not have the advantages of an affiliation with Common Hope.

The graduation trips, Vision Teams, and club student sponsorships are a project of the ERC International Committee in the broad field of literacy, helping Common Hope create environments to allow school attendance rather than the more common practice of field labor (that occurs from sometimes an alarmingly early age). The results, per a University of Chicago study, are palpable and measurable.

Just a reminder: Anyone can sponsor or “half sponsor” a Guatemalan student through Common Hope.

Online ERC & ERF Payments/Donations
It is now possible for members of Elmbrook Rotary Club (ERC) to make online payments and donations both to ERC and to the Elmbrook Rotary Foundation (ERF).

Two separate commercial merchant accounts have been activated which intend to keep transactions separated between ERC and ERF.

To make payments to ERC, simply follow the link provided in one's individual club account (and quarterly statements). A surcharge of 5% is billed to one's club account when utilizing a credit card or debit card.

To make donations or payments to ERF, simply click the "Donate" or "Donate Now" button that can be found on multiple pages on the ERC web site. Or, one can click the URL link that will be provided in ERF invoices to club members. Please ensure that donations or payments intended for the ERF account are not made to the ERC account. The opposite is also true. And, please remember that not all payments to the Foundation [a 501(c)(3) entity] are tax-deductible. IRS rules and policies must be followed.

Finally, one can always use the old-fashioned (and least expensive) way of payment/donation with an individual check or bank check via "Bill Pay" at one's bank.
Kathy's House Expands
Representatives from Kathy’s House visited the Elmbrook Rotary Club on Friday, September 13.

Staff volunteer rep Mona Theobald explained how Kathy’s House provides a true “home away from home” for patients and/or their caregivers. It is a caring place where guests can eat, sleep, and be with others when they want – or be alone when they need time, introspection, and quiet healing. The house provides a place where mutual support thrives, which is one of the great strengths of Kathy’s House.

A vital and an affordable resource in the Milwaukee health care community, Kathy’s House is the only Hospital Guest House in the area that serves patients of all ages and their caregivers who need to travel to Milwaukee for medical care.

Kathy’s House recently embarked on a $12 million capital campaign that has enjoyed great support from Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin. When completed, the completely new facility (being constructed on campus) will have 36 rooms, all ADA-compliant, doubling the current number of rooms and lengthening the number of overnight stays that can be offered.

For more information about Kathy’s House, visit https://kathys-house.org

To learn more about Rotary and our mission & values, visit Elmbrook Rotary Club any Friday morning, breakfast at 7:00 a.m., at the Western Racket Club in Elm Grove, WI.

Horse Sense
Cindy Warner (Professional Executive Coaching, LLC) visited the Elmbrook Rotary Club on Friday, September 6, to discuss logic, emotion, and "horse sense." The full title of her presentation was "Emotional Intelligence and Character: Lessons in Leadership."

A Rotarian from Fond du Lac, she explained that our hearts create an emotional field that is 50x larger than our heads. She also shared that a horse's heart is 12x larger than a human heart; therefore, our equine friends understand emotional connections much quicker and better than we humans do. In fact, her own horse Echo often imitates her very movements and can sense her emotions. Applied to human relationships, this means that understanding and responding to emotions is just as important as is the intellect (mind).

And, visit Elmbrook Rotary any Friday morning at 7:00 a.m. (Western Racket Club in Elm Grove, WI) to hear more interesting presentations and learn more about Rotary.
Global Grant Scholar 2019-2020
W. Leif Van Grinsven is RI District 6270’s Global Grant Scholar for 2019-2020. During this academic year he will pursue a Master’s degree in economic development studies at Sussex University in the United Kingdom.

A native of Franklin, Wisconsin, and graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran H.S., Van Grinsven recently graduated from Wheaton with a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average in Interdisciplinary Studies. He was a three-time Division III Google Cloud Academic All-American and a four-time all-American in men's track & field, including two times this past season. He finished fourth in the decathlon (6,849 points) at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and third in the heptathlon (5,072 points) at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Van Grinsven also claimed all-America honors in the decathlon as a junior and as a sophomore. Additionally, in July he was named the 2019 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) “Man of the Year.” In May he was named “Field Athlete of the Meet” at the CCIW Outdoor Championship, winning his third-straight conference decathlon title with a conference record 7,009 points.

In the summer of 2016, Van Grinsven volunteered with Rahab's Rope in Goa, India, for six weeks. During this time, he planned and taught life skill classes to 20 middle school-aged boys, as well as math and English lessons to 40 middle school students. Van Grinsven also taught current and aspiring entrepreneurs at a business conference in Lahore, Pakistan, and advised on the feasibility and design of a potential microfinance institute operated by the Pakistan Business Community (PBC). During this past summer he engaged in a United Nations summer internship in the Netherlands.

Global Grant Scholar 2018-2019
Ciara McHugh continues her Ph.D. program in research at the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security, and Justice at The Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. This is the second year for this Global Grant Scholar, for whom Elmbrook Rotary Club has served as local liaison in RI District 6270.

Through the support of LINCS (Leverhulme Interdisciplinary Network for Cyber Security) and The Rotary Foundation's Global Grant Scholarship, Ciara is exploring how police and communities interact around the world. She is especially interested in looking at tensions between minority groups and police forces, and how we might rethink relationships between the two. When not researching, she is out hiking in the Mournes, sailing in Belfast Harbour, playing her ukelele at the Sunflower, and trying new vegan recipes.

The Queen's University of Belfast recently awarded her with a scholarship that will enable her to do some of her research in North America. This means that we'll see Ciara from time to time during the coming year. In the meantime, do enjoy her blog (https://ciarajmchugh.weebly.com), which details her adventures and progress in her studies.

Destination Imagination
Susie Coakley, student at Pilgrim Park Middle School, visited Elmbrook Rotary on August 30 to thank the club for its support of the Magnum Bonum ("A Great Good") team of Destination Imagination.

The team was financially supported this past year by the ERC Foundation. The students were able to participate in the Global Finals of Destination Imagination and also accomplished several service projects.

ERC Welcomes Rotary Youth Exchange Student
On Friday evening, August 23, Elmbrook Rotary welcomed its newest Rotary Youth Exchange student, Fuka Sunagawa, from Japan. Five ERC members, together with their families, welcomed Fuka as she arrived at Billy Michtell IAP.

The Jeffrey Griffin family is serving once again as host family for the first months of Fuka's junior year at Elmbrook Central H.S. In addition to father Jeff, the Griffin family includes spouse Sherrie and their adult children, Mackenzie and Patrick. This is the third Rotary Youth Exchange student whom they have hosted.

Fuka was immediately immersed in ERC activities when she and the Griffin family visited the Brookfield Farmers' Market the very next day and got to meet Packers legend Bob Long at the ERC tent. Fuka will be seen frequently at ERC breakfast meetings, beginning on Friday, August 30.
LAUNCH at Elmbrook School District
On Friday, August 30, Dr. Robert Hall provided an overview of the LAUNCH program in the Elmbrook School District. He is the Executive Director of this program opportunity that began in September 2017 for Elmbrook junior and senior high school students. The Wauwatosa School District high schools will also join the program in the current academic year. LAUNCH seeks to connect rigorous learning with real-world, hands-on projects provided by area business and industry. LAUNCH is built on the principles of profession-based learning, professional skills development, self-discovery and exploration, entrepreneurial mindsets, and responsiveness to the needs of students and businesses. The program now includes 400+ students and multiple strands. LAUNCH needs assistance from the business community for:  (1) sharing professional stories & experience; (2) providing project feedback for 75+ projects; and (3) offering mentorship to students. An appeal to ERC members will be forthcoming.

RI Presidential Theme for 2019-2020
A new Rotary year began on July 1. The Rotary International Presidential Theme for 2019-2020 is "Rotary Connects the World."

Mark Daniel Maloney (Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA) is RI President for 2019-2020 and believes that connection is at the heart of the Rotary experience. “(Rotary) allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences,” Maloney says. “It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.”

Rotarians in RI District 3350 (Thailand) have produced an interesting song & video that connects the 2019-2020 Presidential Theme with the work and impact of Rotary worldwide. Click here or on the image below to view and hear the production. It is only 3 min. 29 sec. in length.

At ELMBROOK ROTARY - We Rise & Shine!

When we say "WE RISE & SHINE” to others, it means:
  • WE RISE to meet early every Friday.
  • WE RISE to the occasion by helping those in need.
  • WE RISE to make a difference in our community and the world.

  • WE SHINE by living the Rotary 4-way Test.
  • WE SHINE by staying positive and encouraging others.
  • WE SHINE by lighting the way for service above self in Brookfield, Elm Grove, and beyond.
The tagline appears on our Coffee Mugs, on our Web site, on club emails, and on other communications going out. Try using the tagline the next time you’re talking to someone about Elmbrook Rotary or Rotary in general. In fact, consider purchasing an Elmbrook Rotary Coffee Mug for $7.
